New Delhi: The winter may be coming but it seems to be warmer and more heartfelt in the Capital. Delhites lived up to the adage of Dilwalon ki Dilli and adopted more dogs at the recently held sixth edition of Cause For Paws event. A total of 19 homeless dogs were adopted, which is more than the numbers last year.

Cause For Paws is an adoption drive organised by Select CITYWALK and minister Maneka Gandhi's founded organisation, People for Animals (PFA). The cabinet minister for women and child development, said, “I am happy to be a part of this drive to find homes for abandoned adult dogs. Over the last five years, this initiative has already helped rehabilitation and redemption of seventy dogs. I am deeply grateful to Select CITYWALK for hosting this event year after year.”

While most of the homeless dogs were the adorable desi, Indie breeds some were abandoned pedigreed pets. We spoke to Ambika Shukla, Trustee of PFA and an ardent animal rights activist, about the shocking behaviour of some pet parents. Old age, illness or just boredom, are popular reasons why pets are abandoned.

"One shouldn't abandon their pets. It breaks their heart. They are also a member of your family. Just as you won't abandon your child or your old parent, don't abandon dogs. It would hurt them more when they are separated from a loving home and they seldom survive," says Shukla, who herself is a pet-parent to 16 dogs, some Indies and some Pomenarian.
