This World Blood Donor Day, unleash the myths and facts of donating blood.

New Delhi: Countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day on June 14. This effort aims to raise awareness for the need of safe blood, blood products and also thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. 

The theme for World Blood Day 2019 is ‘Safe blood for all’. While only 8 out of 1000 people are voluntary blood donors in India, many patients lose their lives due to the lack of access to blood. Apart from ample awareness, there are many myths that hover over a blood donor’s mind.

Myth 1: One has to give away a lot of blood

Fact: While a human body contains 5 to 6 litres of blood, donors have to donate only about a pint (around 350 ml) blood. This donation can save up to 3 lives. 

Myth 2: Blood donation is painful and time-consuming

Fact: Apart from a single needle prick, blood donation does not hurt much. It only takes an hour to donate blood and get back to our daily routine.

Myth 3: A day’s rest is required after donating blood

Fact: One can resume work after resting for some minutes only. It is also advised to drink enough liquids in order to replace the lost fluids within a couple of hours. The body produces new cells faster after a donation. 

Myth 4: Blood donation affects the body’s immunity

Fact: Donating blood does not affect a body’s ability to fight diseases. Immunity is preserved. 

Once you donate blood, relax and enjoy some snacks or refreshments. Be proud of yourself as the donated blood has the potential to save some lives.
