Women Achievers: A female auto rickshaw driver challenging conventions and achieving success

Raji Ashok is a 51-year-old woman who drives an auto rickshaw on the busy streets of Chennai. She provides free rides for small children, elderly women, and those in need who may not have the means to pay.

Raji Ashok is making strides in the male-dominated occupation of rickshaw driving. She is truly an inspiration for all those women who desire to break away from the confines of household duties. Raji is a 51-year-old woman who drives an auto rickshaw on the busy streets of Chennai. Regardless of her socioeconomic status, she has emerged as a financially independent woman. Referred to as Raji Akka affectionately, she has been driving an auto rickshaw for the last 25 years. 

Early life

Raji Ashok was born in a humble family, where her father worked in the catering business. She grew up with her six siblings in a modest home. She pursued a BA degree in Philosophy. During her studies, she met Ashok, and the two got married in 1992. 

Life in Coimbatore

After marriage, Raji and her husband relocated to Coimbatore. There she began working at a travel agency while her husband worked as an auto rickshaw driver. In 1994, the couple welcomed their first daughter, and in 1998, they were blessed with a son. Raji and her husband were able to carry out the family’s expenses decently. They were leading a peaceful life until an accident turned everything upside down.

A new life in Chennai 

In the year 1998, a bomb blast took place in Coimbatore in which 60 innocent lives were lost. This incident profoundly impacted Raji’s life. To start a new chapter, Raji relocated to Chennai with her family. After failing to secure a stable office job, Raji decided to become an auto rickshaw driver like her husband. 

New adventures

Embarking on a new journey in a new city always comes with its own challenges. Raji acquired a driving license and endured numerous obstacles to establish herself as a driver in an unfamiliar city. Her first day as an auto rickshaw driver in Chennai was riddled with difficulties. However, gradually, she learned to navigate the busy roads and mastered the driving skills. Throughout her journey, she received immense support from her husband and kids. Today, people often refer to her as Raji Akka, meaning elder sister, showing respect and admiration for her work. 

Free rides

Raji Akka also offers free night rides to children, elderly people, women, and to those in need. Her contact number is available to the public, through which she ensures prompt assistance to everyone. Even after completing her shifts, Raji extends her help to women who seek transportation late at night. Recounting a past incident, she shares that once she witnessed a drunk driver dropping off a woman to her destination. Seeing this, she made a firm commitment to ensure safe travelling experience for women especially at nights. 

Monthly income

Raji Akka’s auto rickshaw is equipped with first aid kits and other basic facilities. In case of emergencies, she provides essentials like paracetamol, cotton buds, bandages, surgical pads, as well as water bottles and biscuits to her passengers. She ensures a safe journey for each of her customer. She earns a comfortable income ranging from Rs 38,000 to Rs 40,000 in a month.
