Vishnu Kumar, a farmer from Rajasthan, has successfully grown various crops using organic farming techniques with minimal water. His greenhouse farming generates substantial annual income. Learn about his inspiring journey in organic farming.

Despite facing water scarcity in many regions of Rajasthan, farmers like Vishnu Kumar are thriving by cultivating crops with limited water resources. A resident of Barana village in the Asind sub-division of Bhilwara, Vishnu has gained recognition for his organic farming practices. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push for organic farming, he has transformed his livelihood and now enjoys a significant annual income.

Organic farming in a greenhouse

Vishnu Kumar cultivates cucumbers and other vegetables in a greenhouse using organic methods, which has helped him generate a substantial annual income. In addition to this, he also grows traditional crops like wheat and various vegetables in his other fields, all using organic farming techniques. To kickstart his organic farming journey, Vishnu bought 5 to 6 indigenous cows and set up a vermicomposting unit. He uses the compost produced for his organic farming and even creates his own organic pesticides.

Three greenhouses

Vishnu established three greenhouses and began cultivating cucumbers using his own organic pesticides. In his very first year, he produced an impressive 100 tons of cucumbers, selling them in the market for Rs 20 to Rs 40 per kg. This successful venture resulted in a profit of Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh.

Recognition

Vishnu shares that one of the biggest advantages of organically grown cucumbers is that they sell immediately upon reaching the market. His dedication to organic farming has earned him recognition, as he has been honoured twice at the district level and twice at the state level for his practices. Currently, he also serves as a member of the management committee at Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, where he represents the farmer's quota.
