Constable Mohammad Jafar finds time after his police duties to teach poor children of his village. Despite his low income, he manages to provide these kids with educational resources and wishes to provide them with a bright future.

Gonda: The mention of the word ‘police’ used to instil a sort of fear in the common public. Mohammad Jafar has successfully changed the complete image of the police department in the Karnail Ganj area of Gonda. Children lovingly call him ‘Police sir’. Through his work, he has made everyone believe that the police department works for the security of them and thus there is no need to be intimidated by them.

Mohammad Jafar’s background
Jafar completed his education in Maharajganj. Financial problems posed difficulties in his completion of graduation, but somehow, he managed to complete his university education in the year 2018. Jafar hoped to clear UPSC exams for which he moved to Allahabad, but the dearth of money made him leave the city. Instead, he cleared an examination in the police department and was posted in the Karnail Ganj village of Gonda.

Supporting his family
Jafar’s family’s financial condition has not improved greatly despite him working. His older brother runs a garment shop and both of them collect money to support their younger brothers’ studies. Due to Jafar’s remote posting, he sends major percentage of his salary back home. He is also married and has to take care of his personal expenses.
Jafar shares that his father worked day and night to educate him and his brothers. As a student, he did not have enough money to buy books, and studied from whatever was taught in the classrooms.

Teaching children for free
When Jafar moved to the village for his work, he noticed that the people were living in the same poor conditions as he grew up in. Rather than feeling bad for the kids, he determined to give them free education.
He carries out his duties as a police constable during the day, and after that resumes his duties as a teacher for these children. He does not let his personal interests and his duties interfere with each other and manages to teach in his free time.

Jafar mentions that these kids live in a remote area and have no access to formal education. There are government schools, but the parents don’t send their kids there. He wishes to change this mentality and strives to educate people about the benefits of education. He teaches Maths, English, Science and Hindi and prepares them to take admissions in schools.

Jafar is affectionately referred to as Police sir by his students. Apart from this village, parents send their kids to study from Balapur, Chandrabhanpur, Kashipur and other villages.

Teaching under the shade of trees
There is no proper place for studying in the village and so, like a typical village scene. Jafar gathers all the kids around and makes them sit under the shade of trees. He uses a white board for teaching. Jafar does not have enough resources for himself but spends money on their books and pens from his pocket.
Jafar believes that a little goes a long way. One of these days, a student might make it big and leave this village to pursue his dreams because of him.

Increasing number of students
Jafar’s school has around 200 students. The weather sometimes poses problems, but even the kids are determined to study well with him.
Jafar has his own dreams; he could not prepare for UPSC exams during his graduation days due to financial crisis, but he has not lost hope. While teaching his students, Jafar nurtures his dreams and is now preparing for UPSC exams again.
Jafar has been honoured by the Gonda Polic department for his noble work.
