Online wedding service platform Shaadi.com launched a campaign against dowry with a dowry calculator that shows dowry stats in India to visitors to raise awareness.
Dowry has been illegal in India since 1961; however, unfortunately, it is still a shameful part of Indian society. Many people are against it and are vocal about it, so when a big, reputed online wedding service platform like Shaadi.com introduces a 'Dowry Calculator', it poses lots of questions and confusion amongst the netizens.
A post was made by an X (formerly Twitter) user on the platform. It was a 'Dowry Calculator' by Shaadi.com but with a twist. The caption read, "Initially was shocked to see Dowry calculator in Shaadi.com A segment of the site show users how much they are worth in the 'dowry' stakes. When you enter your details like educational qualification and income, you are in for a surprise. Instead of showing their dowry worth, the ‘calculator’ shows the visitor stats about dowry deaths in India. Respect and wonderful idea @AnupamMittal"
The post showcased that the 'Dowry Calculator' shows the dowry stats in India to the users and is a medium to raise awareness against it. The users on X praised the campaign in the comments and called it innovative and effective.
One user wrote, "Fantastic! No one should ideally click on the 'Dowry calculator' in the portal. They should also show how many people have used the tool."
"Probably ought to show the fines, jail terms, prosecution statistics and case histories for dowry takers in some detail. Should also detail out helplines and crime reporting numbers as well as portal links," another user wrote.
