Background
At 16, Ravindra began working at a chemist shop, earning Rs 5 a day. It was difficult to survive on a such a small income, but he was determined to support his family. His inspiration to start a poultry farming business came from a neighbour who had made immense profit in the field. This marked the beginning of his new journey.
Poultry farming
Ravindra Metkar began his poultry business in 1984 with Rs 3000 from his father’s PF account. He bought 100 chickens for his farm. Gradually, his hard work paid off and by 1994, his flock had grown to 400 chickens. Meanwhile, he also continued his education and completed his post-graduation in 1992.
He got married and purchased one acre of land in Amravati to expand his business. He took a loan of Rs 5 lakh from the bank to build a farm for 4000 chickens. His business prospered and that allowed him to renovate his home. Over time, the number of chickens on his farm grew to 12000.
Enduring challenges and achieving success
His business was thriving until the bird flu outbreak in India in 2006, which severely impacted the poultry industry. Ravindra faced significant losses and had to sell 16000 broilers at a lower price. Despite the setback, he remained patient and resilient.
In the year 2008, Ravindra took another loan of Rs 25 lakh to further expand his business. Today, his farm spans 50 acres and houses 1.8 lakh chickens. His business is thriving with daily earnings reaching up to Rs 60,000.
