Lucknow: Every time Mohit Singh Chauhan, a resident of Malviya Nagar, Lucknow, witnessed the young children begging and selling balloons on the streets, his heart ached. He took it upon himself to engage with these children to provide them with better opportunities. He discussed it with the parents, emphasizing the importance of education in one’s life. Today, he gives free classes in seven local settlements and slums.
The Mother’s Lap Welfare Foundation
Mohit Singh runs his own business related to events. Mansi Singh, a resident of Aishbagh, was also working as a teacher. When the two met, their thoughts about education aligned, and together they established ‘The Mother’s Lap Welfare Foundation.’ Many other young volunteers joined hands with them. Their collective aim was to reach out to as many children as possible. They understood that not all children could attend formal classes at home, and they needed to visit the settlements to give lessons. These classes were named ‘Phulwari Pathshala.’ The team provides these classes with the consent of the parents.
Working in 7 areas
Mohit Singh learned that many children living in slums were either not attending school or had dropped out midway. He addressed the issue himself by enrolling them in schools; this resulted in improved attendance and regularity. The classes were first launched in Rahimnagar colony and have now been expanded to places like Indrapasthanagar, Aishbagh, Deva Kheda, Hurricanes Garhi. These classes serve as additional lessons to what the kids learn at schools.
Phulwari Pathshala
Approximately 300 students are enrolled at Phulwari Pathshala. The team collects funds from their friends and supporters to provide financial assistance to cover children’s fees, purchase books, bags, sweaters, water bottles and other necessary items. This initiative not only supports the educational needs of the children but also ensures access to essential resources for their well-being.
Supporting children
In 2019, Mohit’s team found out that many children living in the slums were not attending schools regularly as the distance was too far, and they lacked basic means of transportation. Upon identifying 50 such children facing this challenge, the team extended support to the families. With the support of generous people, the team was able to provide bicycles to these children, enabling them to continue their schooling.
An inclusive environment
Mohit strives to create an inclusive environment for these children. His team ensures that these children are not stigmatized due to their background and are welcomed to participate in various activities without hesitation. The purpose of the initiative is to foster confidence in the young kids. By providing opportunities for participation, the team encourages them to realize their potential and feel valued within the community. Mohit shares that last year, one of the students won an award in a drawing competition. They diligently work towards the upliftment of the entire society by educating the children.
