Due to financial difficulties, Prakash Rao couldn’t complete his studies. His dedication to education led him to convert two rooms into a school in 2000 for slum children. Prakash utilized the earnings from the tea shop to support the children’s education. In recognition to his remarkable efforts, he received the Padma Shri award in 2019.

Odisha: Financial constraints posed challenges in pursuing higher education for Prakash Rao. He couldn’t pursue education after grade 8, however, he did not let his goals diminish. He may not have been able to earn his desired degrees, but he determined to provide children from financially weaker backgrounds with better opportunities.

The Government of India recognized Prakash Rao’s work and awarded him with the prestigious Padma Shri award. After his demise, his daughter Bhanupriya took over the responsibility of running the campaign.

Who was Prakash Rao?

Prakash Rao grew up in the slum areas of Odisha. His father fought in World War II. After returning from war, Prakash helped his father in opening a tea shop. Due to financial difficulties, he couldn’t complete his studies. His dedication to education led him to convert two rooms into a school in 2000 for slum children.

Later, he established an organization called ‘Asha aur Ashwasan.’ Prakash utilized the earnings from the tea shop to support the children’s education. In recognition to his remarkable efforts, he received the Padma Shri award in 2019.

Bhanupriya’s efforts

After Prakash Rao’s death, his daughter Bhanupriya continued his noble work. She used to work abroad, and returned to India when her father was unwell. Prakash had urged her to not close the school in his absence. Bhanupriya made a promise to ensure the children’s education.

She quit her overseas job and relocated to Odisha to carry forward her father’s unfinished work. Although managing the school has been challenging compared to the way Prakash Rao handled it, Bhanupriya is making incredible efforts. She helps children secure admissions in better schools and provides proper guidance.

Raising funds

Bhanupriya actively works to raise funds for children’s education. She organizes events like Fun Race Champion to urge people for donations. Her goal is to establish a larger school for children. Currently, her father’s school provides education up to class 5. She aspires to extend the school’s classes up to class 10. The task is challenging but Bhanupriya is determined to fulfil her father’s dreams ensuring that every underprivileged child receives proper education.
