Here’s how the daughter of a pakora-seller cleared the UPSC exam and became an IAS officer

Govind is a street vendor who sells food items on his hand cart. His daughter cracked the UPSC examination and made him feel proud of her. The family’s one-room house bustled with celebration after the results were announced. Deepesh Kumari, who did her M Tech from IIT, is an IAS officer today.

Rajasthan: Deepesh Kumari’s father is a daily wage earner. The family endured through bad times and managed to provide a good upbringing for their children. Today, Deepesh has surpassed everyone’s expectations and has become an IAS officer. Immense dedication and hard work went into the preparation for accomplishing this dream. Who is Deepesh Kumari?

Deepesh Kumari’s residence is near a well in Bharatpur district in Rajasthan. Her father, Govind sells fried pakoras (deep fried fritters) on a handcart. Deepesh’s mother is a homemaker. She has four siblings. The entire family lives in a small house. There were financial constraints, but the parents worked day and night to make the ends meet and to send their kids to good schools. From the very beginning, Govind nurtured a dream of seeing his daughters on top positions. Deepesh made her father’s dream come true by securing an impressive 93rd rank in the UPSC exam. 

Winning scholarships

Deepesh is the eldest sister among her five siblings. She completed her education till grade 10 from Shishu Adarsh Vidya Mandir, Bharatpur City. In board exams of class 12th, she attained 89 percent marks. Deepesh secured a scholarship due to her exceptional academic performance. She pursued a degree in civil engineering from MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur. After completing her graduation, she earned an M Tech degree from IIT, Mumbai. She worked in the private sector for a year. 

Achieving the dream

In the year 2019, her family permitted her to live in Delhi to prepare herself for the UPSC exams. She enrolled in coaching centres to receive proper guidance. During the lockdown, she returned back home and continued her studies with self-preparation. In her first attempt, Deepesh cleared the preliminary round but could not pass the interview round. 

She gave another attempt at it, and under the EWS category she passed the UPSC exam with 93rd rank. When the results were announced, Deepesh’s father was busy with his work. He received the news of his daughter’s accomplishment when people started congratulating him. 

A step closer to a better life

Govind has been involved with the same kind of work for last 25 years. By clearing the exam, Deepesh not only proved her capabilities, but she has assured her parents of a better and comfortable life. The parents shed tears of happiness upon hearing the news. Deepesh’s two brothers are currently completing their MBBS degrees from Latur and AIIMS Guwahati. Her younger sister is already a successful doctor.
