Amid the bustling city of Lucknow, Shama stands out as a unique artisan who channels her talents into crafting bags through the art of crocheting. In a world where speed often dictates the pace of life, Shama embraces a remarkable challenge – creating something remarkable and sustainable through her craft to secure her livelihood.
The machine work took away their livelihood
Shama passionately conveys the impact of mechanization on the creative arts sector, highlighting how the once-thriving crafts of handmade Chikankari and Zardozi have been overshadowed by machines. The artisans' proficiency is undervalued, leaving them in a constant search for work that aligns with their intricate skills.
The pandemic plunged them into even deeper uncertainty, with the ability to earn a daily wage becoming an uphill battle. In the face of adversity, Shama stepped up to fill the void left by her husband's job loss. Recognizing the value of her crocheting talent, she took a bold step into entrepreneurship, founding a start-up that not only sustains her family but also fuels her dreams for a brighter future.
Investment of Rs 2,000
Shama mentioned that her daughter encouraged her to start making crochet bags in the year 2020. Gathering strength to start a new venture was the most crucial step she had to take, and her daughter, Tayyba proved to be her greatest supporter. Tayyba made an Instagram account to promote all of her mother’s handmade items.
Shama bought the best quality raw materials that cost Rs 2,000, and started working round the clock to make ten bags out it. That's how it started, with immense amount of hard work and a bag full of dreams. Shama hoped to exhibit her crocheted bags in a local exhibition near Clock tower. And to her surprise all ten bags were sold, with her customers appreciating her hard work.
Rise of 'Rope Deed'
Shama's Instagram account 'Rope Deed' which is managed by her daughter quickly gained followers. Her page caught attention of an influencer from Mumbai. The influencer bought two of Shama's bags, and gave her two authentic references, which helped her gain more followers and customers from all over the country. Shama happily shares that an investment of Rs 2,000 made her earn 15 times the original amount.
Bags at an affordable price
Shama's collection of bags offers a variety, with prices beginning at Rs 680. Crocheting, while creative and fulfilling, demands significant time and can strain both the eyes and hands. A single misstep can unravel an entire project, necessitating a fresh start. The craft demands a blend of skill, creativity, and precision. Despite the meticulous nature of her work, Shama seamlessly juggles her roles as a homemaker and mother. Undoubtedly, her unwavering dedication has turned her into a source of inspiration for her children.
The struggles of life might have disappointed her but she never lost her will to give her family a better life. Despite the hard labour put in her work, she sells her handmade items at a low price so as to make them affordable for people. The support she receives from her family motivates her to do better and assures her that everything will turn out good in the end.
