Life Changed After Mother's Demise

Vinod Sahadevan Nair hails from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He holds a BSc in Physics. Initially, he worked for a while and then started a web designing company in Kochi. However, a turning point in his life came with the passing of his mother. This event changed the course of his life, leading him to return to his family's fields and explore new possibilities in agriculture.

Collected Banana Varieties by Visiting Several States

Vinod wanted to break free from conventional farming practices. He decided to cultivate banana varieties rarely found in Kerala. To achieve this, he traveled to different states, gaining insights into new farming techniques and varieties. Vinod embarked on journeys to various states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Bengal, and Manipur, to collect rare banana varieties for his farm. He also reached out to various horticulture departments, research institutions, and universities to acquire new banana varieties.

Over 500 Varieties of Bananas

Each type of banana holds its own cultural and historical significance. For instance, 'Manoranjitham,' a special variety from Kanyakumari, is renowned for its aroma. In ancient times, it was customary to hang it in homes during auspicious occasions. Vinod incorporated these cultural aspects into his farming practices. Currently, Vinod's farm boasts over 500 varieties of bananas, including international varieties like Lady Finger, Red Banana, and Blue Java. He has also collected several rare coastal climate varieties from countries like Malaysia, Africa, Australia, Hawaii, and Honduras.

Scientific Farming, Earning One Lakh Rupees per Month

Vinod applied his knowledge of physics to his farming practices. He adopted scientific methods to control plant growth, water supply, and sunlight exposure. He believes that farming is a science where remarkable results can be achieved through proper planning and resource utilization. Vinod Sahadevan sells his produce in the wholesale market, earning him over 1 lakh rupees per month. The various banana varieties grown on his farm are in high demand in the wholesale market.
