From a rooftop classroom, this Delhi Police Constable fuels dreams of government jobs

Every day, a unique school gathers on the rooftop of a modest two-story house in Bahadurgarh, Haryana. Students sit on mattresses, their attention focused on a whiteboard as Ajay Grewal teaches them math, general knowledge, and various other subjects. The classes run from 6 pm to 3 am. After wrapping up his teaching sessions at 3 am, Ajay sleeps for five hours before heading to his office at 8 am.

Ajay Grewal, a Head Constable in the Delhi Police, devotes his free time after duty to educating students. His passion and commitment are instrumental in helping them prepare for government job exams. In 2016, Ajay founded the 'Vidyan Mahadan Coaching Center,' where he teaches more than 100 students in person each day. When including online students, his reach extends to a remarkable total of 10,000, attracting learners from various states across the country.

Dream of Civil Services

Ajay was initially inclined towards wrestling. He continued wrestling even after joining the Delhi Police. But his real dream was to join the Civil Services. After starting UPSC preparation in 2013, he appeared for several exams but couldn't get selected. He now shares his knowledge and experiences with underprivileged children.

Vidyan Mahadan

Ajay employs a unique teaching method. Students not only study on his rooftop but occasionally even sleep there. In addition to his coaching sessions, Ajay operates a YouTube channel called 'Vidyan Mahadan,' which boasts over 6,000 followers and features more than 500 coaching-related videos. This platform enables students from across the country, beyond just Bahadurgarh, to benefit from his lessons.

Many of Ajay's former students, now employed in government positions, regularly return to his coaching center to teach others. His daily routine is extremely demanding, with police duty from 9 am to 5 pm, followed by teaching sessions starting at 6 pm. This schedule is nothing short of a personal sacrifice. Ajay's story goes beyond that of a teacher; it embodies the passion and dedication that have empowered thousands of underprivileged children to pursue their dreams.
