33 failures, 1 success: Study strategy that helped IPS Aditya Kumar achieve his UPSC dreams

Here is the story of a successful officer who faced 33 failures, including three attempts at the UPSC exams, before finally achieving success. Over the course of five years, IPS officer Aditya Kumar appeared for 30 competitive exams, including AIEEE, State Administrative Service, Banking, and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, and failed in all of them.

In an interview, Aditya shared that before clearing the UPSC, he had failed in 30 other exams and three UPSC attempts. Despite these setbacks, he remained determined and persistent, ultimately clearing the UPSC exam on his fourth attempt. In 2018, he achieved AIR 630 and is currently serving as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Sangrur, Punjab.

Background

Aditya Kumar hails from Ajeetpura, a small village in the Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan. After completing his class 12, he decided to become a government officer. In his village of about 250 families, no one had previously become an IAS or IPS officer. Aditya was the first person from his village to resolve to pass this prestigious exam and pursued it with unwavering dedication until he achieved his goal.

Dedication

In an interview, he shared that he studied continuously for several hours in a day for his preparation. Despite his dedicated efforts, he faced multiple failures. Although he often felt discouraged and considered giving up, he resisted social pressure and negativity, motivating himself to continue studying. 

Success mantra

He shared in the interview that he took his studies very seriously and adjusted his preparation strategy after facing repeated failures. He focused on mastering various aspects of his preparation, including time management and general knowledge. According to him, practicing answer writing was one of the most effective strategies, as it improves writing speed and the structure of answers. 

Advice for aspirants

Aditya Kumar advised that aspirants must thoroughly prepare for the prelims. He also highlighted the importance of discipline, consistency, and time management. For the interview round, he shared that interviewers evaluate your personality as much as your knowledge, so it's crucial to be well-prepared about your background.
