The Union Health Ministry issues a nationwide advisory following Zika virus cases in Maharashtra, emphasizing vigilance and proactive measures.
The Zika virus has been reported in several areas of Maharashtra, prompting the Union Health Ministry to issue an advisory to all states.
States are urged to prioritize the screening of pregnant women for Zika virus and closely monitor the development of fetuses in mothers who have tested positive for the infection. Director General of Health Services, Dr. Atul Goel, has issued specific guidelines to health facilities, including the appointment of nodal officers to ensure premises remain free from Aedes mosquito breeding.
Zika virus, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes similar to dengue and chikungunya, poses particular risks to pregnant women. While Zika itself is usually not fatal, it is linked to microcephaly, a condition where babies are born with unusually small heads, which is a significant concern.
As of July 2, 2024, Pune has reported six cases of Zika virus, with one case each identified in Kolhapur and Sangamner. The ministry's advisory underscores the need for enhanced surveillance and proactive measures to control mosquito populations, aiming to prevent further spread of the virus and protect public health.
