Whether you are driving a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler, driving without a license can lead to a traffic police challan. In such cases, you could be fined up to Rs 5,000. However, there are certain vehicles for which a driving license is not required. If you drive one of these vehicles without a license and pass by traffic police, you won’t face any issues.

Driving license

Certain electric vehicles can be driven without a driving license due to government efforts to promote EV adoption. However, not all electric vehicles are exempt from this requirement. Specific rules and conditions apply to driving these vehicles without a license.

Electric two-wheelers

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) regulations, electric bikes with a maximum speed of 25 km per hour do not require a driving license or registration to be driven on the road.

This means that if you purchase an electric vehicle with a maximum speed of 25 km/h, you will not need a driving license or risk fines for speeding. If stopped by traffic police, as long as you answer their questions correctly, you will not be fined.

RTO rules

Rules regarding driving licenses for these vehicles may change depending on local regulations. However, all two-wheelers must be registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and obtain a registration certificate (RC) to be legally operated on public roads. It’s important to adhere to RTO rules of a specific area.
