Obesity in India is increasing at an alarming rate, especially in children. This World Obesity Day, we discuss how India can combat obesity and protect its youth from health issues linked to obesity by adopting a healthy lifestyle and spreading awareness about it.
Every year, March 4, is celebrated as World Obesity Day. The main goal is to spread awareness about this issue and educate people about the potential harms of obesity and ways to defeat it. Obesity is mainly associated with developed countries with easy access to fast food and unhealthy lifestyles. But India’s obesity numbers are rising at alarming rates. If not checked at the right time it might become an issue in future.
Statistics indicate that over 1.25 crore children in India ranging from 5 to 19 years are overweight, i.e. 73 lakh boys and 52 lakh girls. This is concerning as these children might show early signs of diseases linked to obesity, resulting in them facing health issues at a young age. Families, schools, and the government must work together to fight this growing issue in the country. Proper awareness, education, and solutions are needed to ensure a healthy youth. Here are some ways Indians can fight obesity.
1. Healthy dietImplementation of a balanced diet is a must for children as it not only combats obesity but also nourishes the growing child and provides them with all the nutrients necessary for their growth and development.
2. Physical activitiesHumans need to take part in physical activities regularly to keep their bodies fit and burn excess calories. Regular exercise and physical activities are important, especially for kids as they contribute towards healthy limbs and brain.
3. HydrationDrinking enough water is necessary for a healthy body. Adults should encourage children to drink more water and cut off sugary drinks and sodas.
4. Limit screen timeAdults must focus on children’s screen time and should have a limit for it. Encourage kids to not spend most of their time behind the screens and do activities like playing, reading, outdoor activities and more.
5. Regular health check-upsConducting regular health check-ups for kids is a great way to keep track of their health and monitor their growth, development, and overall health.
6. Healthy snackingKids should be made aware of healthy snack options instead of fast food. Encourage eating seasonal fruits, veggies, and other healthy items. Try to present them in a colourful and more appetizing way for the kids.
Awareness and active participation by adults is the only way we can protect the children of India from obesity. Lead by example and try to implement these healthy habits in your daily routine as well.
