Harini, a talented Bharatnatyam dancer, performed for three continuous hours to raise funds for the disaster-stricken region. The natural disaster has claimed 417 lives and caused widespread destruction, leaving many families in dire need of assistance. In response to the crisis, various fundraising initiatives, including a crowdfunding feast in Tamil Nadu, have been organized to provide relief.
The situation has drawn national attention, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to visit Wayanad on August 10. Calls from opposition leaders, such as Rahul Gandhi, to declare the calamity a national disaster are gaining momentum. Such a declaration would ensure the allocation of additional funds for relief and rehabilitation.
In a recent press conference, Chief Minister Vijayan revealed that the Kerala government had requested the Centre to classify the landslides as a national disaster. The Union Home Ministry has formed a nine-member committee to assess the disaster's severity. Vijayan expressed hope for central assistance and a comprehensive rehabilitation package, anticipating that PM Modi would make a decisive call on the matter.
