Uttar Pradesh shootout: Congress' Priyanka Gandhi stopped from visiting victims

Congress general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi was stopped by Mirzapur Police as they cited that she was violating Section 144, which was imposed in the area.

Lucknow: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi was, on Friday, stopped in Mirzapur district from proceeding towards Sonbhadra to meet the victims of a clash between two groups that claimed 10 lives.

19 people were injured in the incident on Wednesday (July 17) in Uttar Pradesh. Some of them were admitted to a hospital in Varanasi, and others at a health facility in Sonbhadra district.

Priyanka Gandhi after meeting the victims at Varanasi was scheduled to go to Sonbhadra, but the Congress general secretary was stopped in Mirzapur by police officials who cited the violation of Section 144. The section prohibits the assembly of more than four people in the area.

As the Congress general secretary was stopped, she decided to stage a sit-in, along with party workers and leaders.

"I want to peacefully meet the family members of the victims who had fallen to the bullets in the clash. I want to see the orders under which I have been stopped to meet them," Priyanka Gandhi said during the sit-in protest.

"I can move ahead only with four people. I want to meet the victims," she stressed.

Earlier, on Wednesday (July 17), a village head, and his supporters reportedly opened fire on a rival group in a land dispute in Sonbhadra. In this incident, 19 people were severely injured, and nine people lost their lives on the spot. One of the victims succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
