UPSC: Salaries and benefits that IAS officers enjoy

Salaries

Candidates who secure positions as IAS officers enjoy good salaries including several other benefits. Under the new pay scale, an IAS officer receives a basic salary of Rs 56,100 per month. Additionally, various allowances such as Travel Allowance (TA), Dearness Allowance (DA), and House Rent Allowance (HRA) are provided. 

When an IAS officer is promoted to the position of Cabinet Secretary, they enjoy a monthly salary of Rs 2.5 lakh including various separate allowances. Notably, a Cabinet Secretary receives a salary twice that of Union Ministers. 

More facilites

The salaries of IAS officers vary, depending on their positions and pay bands. Some additional facilities include security arrangement, and domestic staff such as cooks and gardeners. IAS officers are also provided with a vehicle and driver. They also receive TA for official trips. Furthermore, IAS officers benefit from free or subsidized electricity and telephone services. 

Different cadres

The cadres of successful officers are determined by the UPSC body. A total of 24 services are offered under UPSC, which are categorized into two main groups: Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS). Once selected, candidates are allocated to various cadres within states and union territories based on their ranks and preference.
