In what can be termed as online activism, Twitterati has forced the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to allow citizens to use the flyover that connects Kukatpally Phase five with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTU). The flyover had been completed but was not in use as it had not been inaugurated because of the Model Code of Conduct.
Hyderabad: The flyover between Malaysian Township and JNTU, Kukatpally, was opened for public use on Saturday following massive online activism.
Although no formal inauguration took place for the flyover due to the model code of conduct, vehicular movement was allowed.
Hundreds of Twitter users had tagged officials and politicos seeking them to allow the usage of the flyover.
Netizens had said that they were being denied access to amenities simply because it hadn’t been inaugurated although it was complete.
Under this pressure, the GHMC gave in and allowed for the opening of the structure, which is expected to ease the traffic flow between Kukatpally and Hi-Tec City by 66%.
The flyover that stretches on for 1.2kms has been built at an expenditure of Rs 97.94 crore under Package IV of the SRDP.
The six-lane bi-directional flyover is 20 metres wide, and has a vertical clearance of 5.5 metres.
Peak hour flow of traffic on this route was estimated to be 11,791 passenger car units (PCUs) in 2015.
As per traffic survey, 66% of the peak hour traffic which enters the Rajiv Gandhi Statue junction comes from the JNTU arm towards HiTec City.
The Package IV involves construction of multi-level flyovers, and grade separators at four junctions including Biodiversity junction, Mindspace junction, Ayyappa Society junction, and Rajiv Gandhi Statue junction, the statement said.
