This embarrassed Banerjee, who is fighting a pitched battle against the BJP in the state. Later she said, her courtesy is being politicised by the Prime Minister.

One may recall that in the era of CPI(M)'s Jyoti Basu, Mamata Banerjee was photographed by media every Vijaya Dashami touching the feet of the then chief minister. Basu and Banerjee were otherwise bitter mutual critics.
