The Kerala Student Union (KSU) has called off their eight-day hunger strike. The KSU was on an indefinite strike seeking investigation into the stabbing of a Thiruvananthapuram University college student.
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Student Union (KSU) has called off their indefinite hunger strike in front of the secretariat. The KSU members were on an indefinite strike for the past eight days seeking investigation into the stabbing of a student belonging to the Thiruvananthapuram University College.
The usage of tear gas to control the protesters, had worsened the health conditions of those who were on hunger strike. They were later shifted to hospital following which the hunger strike concluded.
The strike was observed by KSU state president KM Abhijith, Nabeel Kallambalam, Jasheer Pallivel, Jobin C Joy and other members.
Meanwhile, the Thiruvananthapuram University College reopened after 10 days. The college was closed after the victim, Akhil Chandran, was attacked and stabbed by Student Federation of India (SFI) union members following a verbal duel.
On July 12, 20-year-old Akhil, allegedly fought with SFI leaders in the college for singing a song. According to sources, Akhil and SFI leaders in the college engaged in a verbal duel, which escalated and ended up with Akhil being stabbed twice in the chest with a penknife.
Kerala Police have arrested six members of the SFI in connection with the stabbing of Akhil. The accused have been identified as Sivaranjith, Nazeem, Adil, Aromal, Nijab and Advaith.
The Kerala government has appointed a full-time principal in the Thiruvananthapuram University College after the stabbing incident. The then principal K Vishwambharan was removed from the post shortly after the said violence. The new principal CC Babu was earlier the principal of Thrissur Government College.
