The Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) conducted reverification of the mark sheets of those students who committed suicide and claimed that no discrepancies were found.
Telangana: The Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) claimed it reverified the answer scripts of the 20 students who killed themselves, only to find that there we no major errors which would make them pass.
At least 20 students had killed themselves after the results of the board examinations for first year and second year were released.
“The board got all the scripts of candidates who committed suicide and got it re-verified by the subject experts by forming a committee and checked for any errors either in valuing of the answer scripts, posting of marks, or for totalling mistakes. In all cases, the board found that there were no major errors which would change the marks of the student from fail to pass,” the board reportedly said in a release.
The board said that the deaths were a result of dejection due to poor marks.
A total of 9.74 lakh students had appeared in the Intermediate first- and second-year exams that were held in February-March. The Board announced the exam results on April 18.
However, the fiasco began when an error resulted in many bright students receiving very low marks. Some students even said that they were marked 'Absent of Fail', although they had attended the exam.
Following an uproar by the students and parents and protests by student bodies and opposition parties, the state government announced free re-verification of answer sheets of 3.28 lakh students who failed to secure pass marks.
A three-member committee, formed by the government to probe the fiasco, found that the BIE and Globarena Technologies, the IT firm whose services were hired by the BIE, both committed mistakes in preparing the results.
The BJP in Telangana has announced a state-wide bandh on May 2, seeking justice for the victims of the intermediary exams. As many as 20 students committed suicide in just a week under the belief that they had failed the intermediary exams.
