Months after the brutal murder of Dalit man, Pranay, for allegedly marrying an 'upper caste' woman Amrutha, the accused have been granted bail even though cases under Preventive Detention Act had been filed. Amrutha has said that the bail puts their lives at risk.

Nalgonda: Telangana high court has granted conditional bail to Maruthi Rao, accused of killing a 24-year-old Dalit, Pranay, for allegedly marrying his “upper caste” daughter Amrutha. Two other accused Shravan and Karim, were also granted bail.

Rao had allegedly hired contract killers to kill Pranay in broad daylight, that too at a time when his daughter Amrutha was pregnant.

Pranay was hacked to death right before his wife’s eyes when they were returning from a check-up. The incident was caught on camera. All because Pranay who belonged to the Dalit caste, married Rao’s daughter, who belonged to the Vaishya community.

The Nalgonda Police had arrested six persons and filed cases under the Preventive Detention Act. The accused were housed in Warangal Central Prison.

The bails were issued to the three accused during a high court hearing and Pranay’s family have now decided to approach the Supreme Court to ensure that the bail is cancelled.

Amrutha too, wishes that the bail be cancelled against her father. She currently resides with Pranay’s parents with her four-month-old child. Pranay’s family allege that their lives are in danger with the grant of bail for the accused.

Since Pranay’s murder, Amrutha has said that her father wanted her to abort the child, and the family has been living in fear. Amrutha said to media persons, “We’re all deeply disappointed by the decision of the high court. I ask the state government to give security to my family.”

Amrutha, alongside Dalit and human rights activists, have been fighting to put the persons responsible for the brutal caste killing behind bars since the incident. The murder took place in September last year and the accused had been lodged in Warangal Central Prison.
