A statue of Bharat Mata in Tamil Nadu was covered up by the police as a few Christians complained that the statue hurt their feelings.
Bengaluru: In an incident that can boil your blood and leave you disheartened and dismayed, a statue of Bharat Mata or ‘Mother India’ was covered inside a private temple premises at Puliyur village, Tamil Nadu.
Quite naturally, the incident has left many Hindu organisations fuming and fretting, as also take umbrage.
Protests by cadres of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Hindu Munnani, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) later led to the police uncovering the statue.
According to a popular website, the Bharat Mata statue was inside a 200-year-old Isakki Amman (Durga) temple in Puliyur village. Recently, a family of a daily worker Muthu Kumar had erected the Bharat Mata statue.
But Christians in the area took offence to the statue and complained to the police that their feelings were hurt. Immediately, the police swung into action and asked the locals to uninstall the statue of face action.
Once the news spread, Hindu organisations rushed to the spot, uncovered the Bharat Mata statue, garlanded it and worshipped it. They also wondered how the police could take such action.
It is said the installation of the statue is against the recommendations of the Venugopal Commission to install a statue without Government permission.
As of now, the police have not responded to the allegations.
As reported by a popular website, the temple owner has now lodged a written complaint against the police action, while all the three organizations have decided to complain against the deputy superintendent of police.
According to the 2011 Census, Christians make up 46.85 per cent of the population in Kanyakumari and Hindus 48.65 with Muslims making up the rest.
Communal harmony can’t be a one-way street. Bharat Mata is the mother of all Indians, irrespective of their religion, caste, creed and sex.
Sadly, in India, secularism has become bashing up Hindu feelings and their beliefs.
