The Supreme Court has rejected Congress president Rahul Gandhi's expression of regret for misinterpreting its decision to include a newspaper report as permissible evidence in the Rafale case.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a contempt notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi. The apex court has rejected his expression of regret for misinterpreting its decision to include a newspaper report as permissible evidence in the Rafale case. Rahul had touted the decision as the apex court's verdict that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a 'chor' (corrupt). The court rebuked him as the case has not reached any conclusion.

Rahul had on Monday regretted in Supreme Court for getting carried away "in election zeal". He was responding to the contempt petition filed by BJP MP and lawyer Meenakshi Lekhi against his comment on the Rafale controversy in which he has repeatedly said that the Supreme Court has deemed PM Modi a 'chor'.

The plea to close the contempt case by the Congress was also rejected by the Supreme Court. Rahul has not been exempted from personal appearance either.

PM Modi launched his party's 'Main Bhi Chowkidar' campaign ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The PM released a video with the same title on Twitter and said, "Your Chowkidar is standing firm and serving the nation".
