New Delhi: The Supreme Court on April 11 permitted firework displays for the Thrissur Pooram celebration. The court also advised using only those fireworks which are permissible by the central agency.
The Supreme Court today allowed fireworks display for the Thrissur Pooram festival while observing that the celebration is a part of the social and cultural ethos of Thrissur. The bench was hearing a plea by Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi Devaswoms which fund the annual Pooram festival held in the premises of the famous Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur, to permit firework displays.
A ban had been earlier imposed on fireworks in the state after the Kollam Puttingal Temple tragedy that claimed more than 100 lives. The disaster took place on April 10, 2016, after a stash of crackers caught fire during a competitive firework display held at Puttingal temple. More than 1400 people suffered burns and injuries. The survivors are yet to recover from the trauma.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sidestepped protocol and rushed to Kollam. He chaired a special state cabinet meet at Kollam and took stock of the situation. A special medical team from Delhi landed in Kollam and a naval ship also reached the Kollam coast to provide any possible help. The state and central governments provided Rs 12 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 2.5 lakh to the injured.
