His talent was quickly recognized, and he was selected to represent the Indian U-20 team, marking the start of his professional football career. His first major break came in 2002 when he joined Mohun Bagan, one of India's most prestigious football clubs, at just 17 years old. This marked the beginning of a career that would take Indian football to new heights.

His consistent performances earned him a spot on the Indian national team, making his senior debut in 2005 against Pakistan.

One of Chhetri’s early highlights came in 2007 when he scored crucial goals in the Nehru Cup, where India won the tournament under coach Bob Houghton. His influence continued to grow as he played a pivotal role in India’s triumph at the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, where India secured a spot in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, a major milestone for Indian football after a long absence from the tournament.
