Guwahati: Three coaches of the Silchar-Thiruvanathapuram Superfast Express caught fire at Silchar railway station in Assam’s Cachar district on Sunday morning.
The Silchar-Thiruvanathapuram superfast express is the longest running superfast train, with a total of 54 halts and runs for about 76 hours and 35 minutes.
The passenger train was stationed at the Silchar railway station when the coaches caught fire.
Reports said that the fire broke out in the pantry car and later spread to two other coaches. Panic broke out among the passengers waiting on the platform.
Following the incident, the Silchar Fire Service and SDRF personnel immediately reached the spot and efforts are on to douse the flames.
There is no report of any human casualty in the incident.
Local MP, Sushmita Dev, tweeted, "The fire at Silchar railway station burning down coaches of the Trivandrum Express raises questions on safety and security measures. Luckily no loss of life but the reasons for fire must be investigated thoroughly."
