Jammu and Kashmir are on high alert for the fifth anniversary of Article 370’s abrogation, with security measures including a convoy ban and active deployment for Amarnath routes.
In light of the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir is on heightened security alert. On August 5, 2019, the Indian government revoked Article 370, which granted special status to the region, and bifurcated the state into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
To ensure safety on this significant date, security forces have been instructed to avoid all convoy movements. An advisory issued to all security agencies calls for a “dry day,” meaning no security convoys are to operate on August 5. This precaution is aimed at minimizing risks and preventing potential terror attacks.
Additionally, there will be no movement of convoys transporting Amarnath pilgrims between base camps. However, agencies responsible for maintaining security on the Amarnath yatra routes and national highways have been directed to maintain active deployment to ensure the safety of pilgrims and travelers.
The abrogation of Article 370 remains a highly contentious issue. While most political parties in Jammu and Kashmir criticize the decision, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans to hold celebratory events across the union territory. For the BJP, the abrogation was a significant electoral promise, and marking the anniversary is a way to celebrate this milestone.
Security agencies have issued the alert due to concerns about potential terrorist activities, underscoring the heightened vigilance on this day. As the anniversary approaches, the focus remains on maintaining order and ensuring public safety across the region.
