Bengaluru: The Centre has said that Justice S Abdul Nazeer has been provided Z category security post the Ayodhya verdict. Justice Nazeer was allegedly threatened by the Popular Front of India (PFI).
Justice Nazeer was one of the judges of the five-member Constitution bench that delivered the verdict in the Ayodhya case on November 9.
The ministry of home affairs has directed the Karnataka government and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to provide Z category security to Justice Nazeer and his family members.
Currently, Karnataka police have provided Justice Nazeer with security as per the Centre's directive.
The decision to provide Z category security was taken after a section of media reported that Justice Nazeer was being threatened.
After this allegation, the PFI issued a statement and said: This (allegation) was an attempt to "malign the organisation" said general secretary, PFI, M Mohammed Ali Jinnah.
Abdul Nazeer was born at Belvai, Moodbidri in Karnataka, on January 5, 1958. He completed his primary education at Belvai and pursued BCom at Mahaveer College in Moodbidri. He later graduated from SDM College in law.
He started working as a lawyer in Karnataka high court in 1983. He was appointed as judge in Karnataka high court in 2003. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2017.
Abdul Nazeer was also the sole Muslim justice in the five-judge bench that had delivered its judgment on Triple Talaq.
