Union home minister Amit Shah also paid his tributes to the king.

He said, “His loyalty, dedication and sacrifice for the motherland will always be an inspiration.”

Shivaji was born on this day in the year 1630 at Shivneri fort in Pune.

Shivaji continues to live and lead many as an inspiring figure even to this day.

Though born in Maharashtra, Shivaji continues to be a pan-Indian figure. He is even elevated to the position of a national hero. Young children are always told about Shivaji maharaj’s exploits and it is needless to say it forms an integral part of children’s upbringing. In India’s history, Shivaji remains an eternally inspiring figure.

When it comes to Indian Freedom struggle, it is he who is considered to have sown the seeds of freedom movement.

A popular website quoted thus: The Jayanti of the great emperor was first started in Pune in 1870 by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, who had discovered the tomb of Shivaji Maharaj on Raigad. Phule also wrote the longest and first Ballad on Shivaji Maharaj’s life.

It is to be noted that Bal Gangadhar Tilak used the occasion to unite people during British oppression.
