Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has hit out at the BJP, Amit Shah (BJP national president) over NRC

Bengaluru: As the BJP gets ready to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in several states, including West Bengal and Karnataka, Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has hit out at the BJP, Amit Shah (BJP national president) in particular over the issue.

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, he said, “NRC is unconstitutional. It is against the spirit of equality and against the idea of India. It certainly exposes the hypocrisy of the BJP. In fact, NRC endorses Jinnah’s theory.”

Taking severe exception to his remarks, Shreenath Sheshadri, a BJP spokesperson said, “My country can’t be a home for anybody and everybody. It belongs to the people of this country, irrespective of their religion, caste and creed. It there are others who are trying to take advantage of this fact, we should first know who they are. Secondly, when the issue of economy comes into picture, we would like our people to be taken care of. So there is nothing wrong with NRC.”

On the issue of Owaisi broaching the topic of Jinnah and trying to compare the two issues, the spokesperson added, “When Jinnah wanted a nation based on religion, we didn’t object. We had people who believed in India and its constitution. They are a part of this country. Owaisi is only trying to twist things to suit his demands. We don’t want him to divide and rule us.”

The issue of NRC has been hotly debated. Just a few days ago, Union home minister Amit Shah, in the land on Mamata Banerjee, thundered that NRC would also be implemented in West Bengal.

NRC was first implemented in the state of Assam and it was updated recently.

In simple words, NRC is a register which is maintained by the Government of India having names & certain relevant information for identification of Indian citizens (till now Assam state). However, there has been massive opposition to the NRC implementation as the opposition feels a particular section of the society will be targeted.
