After a 7-year long wait, the Patiala house court has pronounced the verdict in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case. The convicts will be hanged on January 22.
New Delhi: The Patiala house court on January 7 pronounced its verdict in the Nirbhaya case. Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora pronounced the verdict in front of the convicts. They will be hanged at 7am on January 22.
Video conferencing:
All four convicts were produced before Delhi court via video conferencing before Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora. Convict Akshay had sought permission to speak to the court too.
The verdict comes weeks after the court has adjourned the hearing in the matter, granting time to the convicts of Nirbhaya case to take up legal remedies.
During the hearing, the prosecution said there was no application pending before any court or the President right now by any of the convicts and the review petition of all the convicts was dismissed by the Supreme Court.
Curative petition:
AP Singh, ML Sharma, the counsel of the two convicts Mukesh and Vinay said that they were in the process of filing curative petition in the Supreme Court.
During court proceedings, convict Akshay presented a media report before the court, saying it is "baseless". The judge asked media to leave the court.
Nirbhaya case:
The 23-year-old was gang-raped and brutally assaulted on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 inside a moving bus in south Delhi by six persons before being thrown out on the street. She died on December 29, 2012 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. One of the six accused in the case, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail.
Convicts:
Four men, Pawan Gupta, Mukesh, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh face the gallows after being held guilty of Nirbhaya's gang-rape, torture and killing on December 16, 2012.
