National Doctor's Day: Resident medical practitioners' strike at Delhi hospital enters second day

New Delhi: On National Doctor's Day, resident medical practitioners of north Delhi's Hindu Rao Hospital continued their strike for a second day in a row demanding doctors' safety and halted all Outdoor Patient Department (OPD) services.

A junior doctor was allegedly attacked by the relatives of a patient, who died during treatment on Saturday. Junior doctor Rajesh Kumar suffered severe head injuries and was later discharged. Regarding this, the resident doctors launched the protest on Sunday. 

One of the doctors, who is protesting, said to the media that only emergency services will be operational in the hospital. He added that the patient's condition was bad and everything was explained to relatives, but 10-15 people barged in and thrashed the doctor.  Protesting doctors were seen raising slogans such as 'Save the Saviour' and 'Band Karo OPD Band Karo' at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the deceased patient's husband and son broke furniture and other equipment in the hospital after they were informed about the death. The relatives were damaging the properties of the hospital, alleging the negligence of the hospital authorities. The patient was suffering from liver disease and was on a ventilator. 

In a similar incident, doctors in West Bengal went on a strike for a week after family members of a patient, who died, assaulted doctors at the government-run Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College in Kolkata. The strike was called off after West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee assured them of improved hospital security.
