Mysuru gang rape: Probe speeds up as victim’s friend recovers

The victim’s friend apparently stopped the bike to relieve himself, when four men who were consuming liquor in a car allegedly grabbed the girl and raped her. The gang also assaulted her friend.
 

Mysuru: Police have said that the probe in the case of the gang rape of a woman and assault of her friend in Mysuru has intensified. The victim's friend is said to be responding to the treatment but is still not in a position to speak up on the issue.

A 23-year-old woman was reportedly gang raped at Lingambudhi Palya in Mysuru while she was returning home after finishing work. The victim was accompanied by her male friend when four men in an inebriated state assaulted her friend and raped the woman.

The male friend apparently stopped the bike to relieve himself, when the four men who were consuming liquor in a car in the region grabbed the girl.

The boy was beaten up and he suffered injuries to his spine. Both the girl and the boy cried for help, but rescue came only after the gang had fled the scene. The victims were admitted to KR Hospital after local residents spotted them on the road. 

The woman is undergoing counselling by the Department of Women and Child Welfare’s special cell ‘Gelathi’.

Amit Singh, superintendent of police in Mysuru has formed four teams to nab the culprits. As it was dark, the victims could not recall details of the features of the culprits. Police are trying to nab the culprits by trying to obtain details of people who visited nearby liquor shops on the that fateful day. Police are also screening CCTV footage obtained in the area and have resorted to phone tapping.

A case has been booked under IPC Sections 376 (rape) and 379 (theft) by Jayapura Police.

Police have recorded the statement of the victim, but the victim's friend has just begun to speak again and is still in shock.
