Monsoon claims 4 lives; heavy rains to continue in Kerala for next 5 days

A yellow alert has been issued in 10 districts of Kerala on June 11. Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts of Kerala are indicated to have heavy rains. The Indian Meteorological Department also announced an orange alert in these three districts on June 12.
 

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced heavy rains in Kerala for the next five days. The department also announced an orange alert in three districts on Wednesday (June 12). Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts of Kerala are indicated to have heavy rains.

A yellow alert has been issued in 10 districts of the state on Tuesday (June 11). The districts are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kozhikode. The yellow alert will continue in  Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kozhikode on Wednesday too.

IMD advised the fishermen not to venture into the sea, as the wind speed is likely to increase from 90-100kmph to115 kmph over east-central and adjoining northeast region of the Arabian Sea.

Meanwhile, four people were killed in the state due to heavy rains. Two pedestrians were electrocuted as power lines fell into a waterlogged area during heavy rains in the state. The incident occurred at Pettah in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. 

Another man died as an uprooted tree fell on him in Kochi. Kerala State Electricity Board contract employee was also killed on Monday evening at Palakkad after he fell from an electric pole during heavy rain. Rajesh fell from the pole while he was busy with the maintenance work on the electric post. Even though he was taken to the hospital immediately, he succumbed to injuries.
