MGNREGA: Yogi Adityanath-led UP government likely to extend number of working days

Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government issued a directive to officials to provide jobs to migrants at the local level. The state government has also taken a lot of effort to boost the rural-based economy.

Lucknow: Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is planning to provide more relief to jobless migrants and labourers in the state soon. The UP government could extend the number of working days in the year from 100 to 150 under the MGNREGA scheme in the state to support workers who lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the UP government over 30 lakh migrants have returned from other states and are now without work, seeking help from the government to provide them work in order to sustain their livelihood during the coronavirus pandemic.

Amidst the corona havoc, all industrial and business activities have been gravely crippled in the state, and more than 30% of returnees, who arrived in their respective hometowns are not willing to go back. In fact, providing jobs to all workers is one of the biggest challenges for the government.

UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath had already made promises to the public, stating the government would provide jobs to the workers who have been rendered jobless. Now, the UP government is trying to find other ways to support labourers and migrants under the MGNREGA scheme, including extending the number of working days from 100 days to 150 days in UP.

The state government has already taken several steps for the welfare of the migrants and labourers.
