Delhi Constable Than Singh runs a free school for kids to provide them with education and opportunities to escape slums and lead self-sustainable lives.

Imagine an India, where young kids do not have to pick rags from the roads and do odd jobs, instead go to school and get a proper education for a well-rounded and independent life. Many individuals dream of this future for the nation, but only a few put work into it to make it a reality.

We are talking about a real-life hero Than Singh, who is a police constable in New Delhi. He runs a school around the Lal Qila area called 'Than Singh ki Patshahala'. The school has been running for 9 years now and has provided hundreds of students with education and hope for the future.

Speaking about his journey from 2015, Than Singh told The Better India, "Many tourists would come and click their photos, mocking their circumstances, I hated to see that. These children were doing odd jobs for Rs 50 because their parents did not have enough resources to take care of them."

“I also found these children were eating gutka. There are many people who influence children to walk the wrong path, but very few come forward to help them. I wanted to look for options so that these children could do what they are meant to do at this age – study," he added.

Looking to help the kids, Than Singh took the initiative and decided to teach the students so they could learn basic reading and writing skills. "My main objective to teach these children was to prevent them from committing crimes in the future and instil good behaviour among them," he said.
