A village in Manipur has been able to employ most of its women, thereby helping them earn more income and live a life of dignity
Bengaluru: Kirembikhok village of Toble district, is just 32 km from Imphal, the capital of Manipur.
And what is so special about this village?
It has a population of 1500 people, out of which 80 percent are women.
Report add that they work from 7 and 11 in the morning and from 5 onwards in the evening.
They earn around Rs 10,000 every month.
What is more special is that there is no unemployment here at all. Women augment the incomes of their families and also ensure that the children get to study.
As reported by Dainik Bhaskar, Ahomsangbaum Radhamani, a villager says, “20 years ago, my husband used to work in carpentry. The household expenses were not met by single income. I could not find any work in the fields, so I decided that I would help my husband in the factory. I sought work from factory owner Kangjam Inaobi. As soon as he agreed, I got involved in this work. Within a week, five-six other women of the village also started working with me and today most of the women are engaged in this work”.
Kangjam, the owner of a furniture company employs every hand in the village. He says, "Surprisingly to me, women did not consider this work to be the work of men. Learning carpentry work from her husband, she proved that they too are not less compared to men. The result was that every family here is earning more than 20-30 thousand rupees”.
With their income, these ladies repay their debts and fund the education of their children too.
Earlier, these women would take money from self-help groups in order to sustain their lives. Now, it is heartening to note that, with the help of the incomes they get, they are able to lead a life of dignity.
