Guwahati: Perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal is aiming to get elected to the Parliament for a consecutive third term from Assam’s Dhubri Lok Sabha seat.

The Dhubri Lok Sabha seat spanning over 10 Assembly segments is dominated by Muslim voters and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Ajmal is confident of a win for the third time in a row.

The 69-year-old Ajmal, who wears many hats like politician, businessman, philanthropist, healer, scholar – his party has contested in only three seats in the state – Dhubri, Karimganj and Barpeta.

This election is a test for Badruddin’s political future after the Congress had also fielded former legislator Abu Taher Bepari from Dhubri.

BJP’s ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had also fielded former legislator Zabed Islam in the Muslim dominated constituency.

Ajmal had entered Assam politics by forming the AIUDF in 2005, when the Supreme Court had struck down the controversial Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act 1983 Act.

For decades Dhubri sent a Congress candidate till 2009 when Ajmal won the seat defeating Congress’s Wazed Ali Choudhury and Ajmal polled 592,569 votes while Choudhury received 362,839.

In 2014, Ajmal again won the seat and was elected to the lower house for a consecutive second term. In this election, 90.66 % voting was recorded in Dhubri.
