The announcement for a 13-day medical camp by revenue minister E Chandrasekharan was reported in June. However, the Kasaragod district collector has now announced that only a 1-day medical camp would be conducted following an order by the state government
Kasaragod: The Kerala government has considerably shortened the duration of the medical camp for endosulfan victims which was earlier announced to be held in Muliyar Grama Panchayath, Kasaragod district, Kerala. It was previously announced that a 13-day medical camp would be conducted for victims of the endosulfan tragedy.
Though state revenue minister E Chandrasekharan had announcement that a 13-day medical camp would be conducted, the Kasaragod district collector has now announced that the medical camp will be held for the duration of a day following a government order.
Members of the Anti-Endosulfan committee is planning to stage a protest to demand the inclusion of suspected endosulfan victims in the medical camp. The committee has staged several protests against the Kerala state government claiming that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan failed to keep his promise made to the endosulfan victims.
Residents of Kasaragod district were exposed to the insecticide endosulfan between the years 1975 and 2000. The endosulfan tragedy occurred after the Plantation Corporation of Kerala sprayed the chemical aerially on its 12,000 acres of cashew estates.
More than 1,000 people died following the incident in the region. Since then, hundreds of children have been born with congenital disabilities, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, diseases of the nervous system and severe physical and mental disabilities.
The Plantation Corporation of Kerala stopped spraying endosulfan in 2001, but its impact is still felt in Kasaragod. Many babies are still born with genetic disorders and physical deformities.
