Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan in response to the letter sent by Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi, entrusted the district collector with the submission of a probe report in the case of a farmer's suicide at the earliest in order to take further action, including financial assistance. Pinarayi Vijayan also said that a continuous effort is being made in the state to help farmers and moratorium has been declared on repayment of farmer loans.
Vijayan also requested Rahul Gandhi to raise the issue of farmers in the state in Parliament. Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi had written to Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan seeking a probe in the suicide of farmer V Dinesh Kumar of Panamaram panchayat in Kerala's Wayanad.
Rahul Gandhi, in his letter to Pinarayi dated May 28, said he was "deeply saddened" by the farmer's suicide. He requested the state government to conduct an inquiry and extend financial support to the family.
Rahul said that he spoke to Kumar’s widow. She told Rahul that her husband took the extreme step as he was not able to repay the loan, he mentioned in his letter. According to reports, Kumar had taken a loan of Rs 10 lakh from three banks and was reportedly facing recovery proceedings.
The letter has stated that representatives of financial firms are worrying farmers even after the state government announced moratorium for agricultural loans till December 31, 2019. Along with a probe, financial aid should be provided to his family, the letter requested.
Seven farmers have committed suicide in Wayanad because of fiscal burden. Climate change, falling prices and problems with the yields are some of the key issues in Wayanad.
