Chennai: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has invited leaders of various opposition parties for a memorial meeting on the occasion of the first death anniversary of the former Tamil Nadu chief minister and party president, M Karunanidhi, on Wednesday (August 7).
Karunanidhi passed away on August 7, 2018.
According to reports, West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamta Banerjee, Puducherry chief minister V Narayanasamy of the Congress, former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and National Conference chief and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah are set to take part in the event. However, Abdullah's presence is doubtful due to the present situation in Jammu and Kashmir after the scrapping of Article 370.
Leaders of other parties in the state such as MDMK, VCK, CPI, CPI-M and others are expected to take part in the memorial meeting.
According to reports, Mamata will be unveiling the statue of Karunanidhi, which has been placed in the office of DMK's newspaper "Murasoli". The leaders are also expected to take part in a meeting which is scheduled to be held in Chennai later in the evening.
Meanwhile, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Naidu had praised the Central government's decision in scrapping Article 370 and converting them into two union territories, the opposition leaders are expected to condemn the Centre's decision that conferred special status on the erstwhile state.
Apart from Naidu, DMK president MK Stalin, Mamata and others had opposed the Centre's decision.
