Vice President Venkaiah Naidu was called as a chief guest for the third JNU Convocation. Several police and CRPF personnel were halted at the University premises.

Delhi: Students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) staged a protest at their campus demanding the withdrawal of the Hostel Manual and reduction in fee hike. The students have been continuing their protest for over a week now.

The protest took an ugly turn while the JNU Convocation is underway inside the campus where Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu is invited as the chief guest.

There is massive police and CRPF deployment as Vice President, Venkaiah Naidu is currently addressing the 3rd Convocation of JNU at the campus as the protest rages outside.

On Thursday, the JNU administration urged the students to stop the protest against the hostel manual, which includes dress codes.

The administration also requested the protestors to call off their strike as it was affecting other students' academic activities.

"These agitations have affected the normal life of a large number of innocent students from across India who are unable to concentrate on their studies, complete academic assignments and prepare for their examinations," the administration said in a statement.

"The administration appeals to the agitating students to stop their propaganda and falsehood campaigns, and spare the vast majority of innocent students who want to concentrate on their studies," it added.

However, the agenda of the protest stood strong over the fee hike. The students also alleged that more than 40% of the students studying at the JNU were underprivileged and could not afford the money.
