JNU partially rolls back fee hike order after student unions intensify protests

Following protests from various student groups, ABVP too had approached the University Grants Commission (UGC) with signatures of JNU students against fee hike and new hostel manual. The JNU has partially rolled back its order of fee hike.

New Delhi: According to latest reports, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Executive Committee has announced a partial rollback of hostel fees hike. The decision was taken in University's Executive Council meeting following widespread protests.

The committee is said to have proposed a scheme for providing economic assistance to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students.

Thousands of JNU students staged protests and clashed with the police outside the varsity campus and termed the decision anti-student policy on November 11.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also joined the protest against fee hike in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and new rules for the hostel inmates.

ABVP had approached the University Grants Commission (UGC) with signatures of JNU students against fee hike and new hostel manual.

In a press statement, ABVP had earlier said it will carry out the signature campaign and submit it to the UGC. "If UGC does not agree to our demands, we will sit on an indefinite strike," ABVP had said adding that it was committed to making the university administration roll back the fee hike.

JNU students had been protesting against the fee increase and new hostel manual which also includes provisions on dress code and curfew timings since October 28.

 JNU Students’ Union along with Students’ Federation of India, Democratic Students’ Federation, All India Students’ Association and All India Students’ Federation were staging protests against the fee  hike for the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, National Students’ Union of India had also expressed unconditional solidarity and support to the protests.

The JNU had increased the fee of JNU hostels up to 300%.
