Tension intensified at Kolkata's Jadavpur University as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists attempted to storm the institution while students and teachers gathered at the gate to resist them
Kolkata: Violence occurred outside Kolkata's Jadavpur University on September 23 after Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists attempted to storm the institution. A group of ABVP members tried to enter Jadavpur University as part of protest march against the violent clashes which occurred on September 19, where Union minister Babul Supriyo was gheraoed by the students linked to the CPM group.
As the police reached and put up barricades outside the university gates, ABVP students started pelting stones and even tried to break the barricades and march inside the university. The teachers of the Jadavpur University and students even tried to stop the ABVP activists from entering the premises. The same students were seen carrying posters and shouting slogans against the BJP.
Meanwhile addressing a trade unions’ meet in Kolkata, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said protests were important in a democracy. “The day protests lose their value, India will stop being India. Democracy still exists in Bengal while there is no democracy at a few places. We have seen what happened at Jadavpur University,” Mamata Banerjee said.
Union minister Babul Supriyo was heckled in Jadavpur University on September 19. Supriyo was shown black flags and was allegedly heckled by a section of students at the University in Kolkata.
He was visiting the place to address a seminar organised by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) - the student wing of the RSS. Supriyo was initially stopped from entering the campus for around one-and-half hours by members of two Left-leaning organisations - Arts Faculty Students' Union (AFSU) and Students Federation of India - (SFI), who chanted 'Babul Supriyo Go Back' slogans.
