Here is how few adolescent girls got together and started a movement in their village to change the name. Ahead of International Day of the Girl Child (October 11), we focus on bringing you stories of young girls who have made a mark for themselves.
What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear the name 'Kudamau'? A field of garbage or a waste dumping ground? This is the reason why the natives of Kudamau felt embarrassed and did not like their village name being associated with these meanings.
But the future of Kudamau changed after Anjali, a 15 year-old-girl started attending Breakthrough’s school-based gender equity program called Taaron ki Toli (Gang of Stars) sometime in December 2017.
Anjali and a few girls of her village approached the trainer of Breakthrough with their issue. The trainer advised them to think of a new name. They came up with: Sundernagar (a beautiful town).
These adolescent girls got together and started a movement in their village to change the name. They got people from the community, block and district level authorities on board. They even got the state finance minister to support them!
Now, people have started sending out wedding invites with the name 'Sundernagar'! Guests are being welcomed to Sundernagar and not Kudamau.
