Recently, a passenger posted a tweet on X, sharing his personal experience of booking train tickets. Despite booking a train ticket for his elderly uncle and requesting a lower berth due to his leg problem, the Railways assigned an upper berth instead.

In response to the tweet, Indian Railways provided some information. Let’s understand it in a few simple points.

•    If you book a ticket under the general quota, seats are assigned based on availability.
•    If no seats are available, you will not be able to reserve one.
•    Alternatively, booking under the Reservation Choice Book option ensures a lower berth if available.
•    Seats in the general quota are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. No human intervention is involved in this process.
•    However, passengers can approach the TTE to request for a lower berth. If one is available, it can be provided accordingly.
